The Queen’s Chamber Band’s Halloween Celebration Concert at Adelphi on October 31, 2010
New York’s finest early music ensemble, led by harpsichordist Elaine Comparone, celebrates the glories of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and Vivaldi’s Concerto in D minor for Viola d’Amore, as well as music by Purcell, Monteverdi, and Rameau, concluding with Long Island native Marshall Coid’s spirited Vampire Cantata. This Baroque Halloween Celebration graces our Concert Hall stage Sunday, October 31, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. and concludes with a costume contest. Winners of the most creative costume win special musical prizes.
Since her debut as a Concert Artists Guild award winner, Elaine Comparone’scareer has included recitalist, soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist. She has collaborated with composers, choreographers, and video artists, and is the founder/director of Harpsichord Unlimited, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the harpsichord’s history and music. The New York Times says Comparone is, “a harpsichordist with few equals” and her success with the instrument led to a Fulbright Fellowship to study with the praised Isolde Ahlgrimm at the Academy of Music in Vienna.
Marshall Coid has received critical acclaim for his performances as the White Rabbit in the new contemporary Opera Alice in Wonderland. His career began at nine, studying violin from Babylon-based teacher John Atherton. Coid’s compositions include an opera, a musical, several theatre scores, and ensemble works like Vampire Cantata. Fanfare Magazine said that Mr. Coid “…produces the powerful, yet unforced tone of a true countertenor” and the New York Times described Coid as, “astonishingly versatile.” Other credits include vocal and violin soloist in Twelfth Night live from Lincoln Center alongside film stars, Kyra Sedgwick, Helen Hunt, and Paul Rudd, and his current gig as onstage violin soloist for Chicago, Broadway’s longest-running revival.
In 1762, John Christian Bach, known as the “London Bach,” and a few musical friends formed an ensemble to entertain Queen Charlotte Sophia in her private chambers – The Queen’s Chamber Band. In light of this intimate, personal performance, Elaine Comparone successfully recreated The Queen’s Chamber Band now featuring, flutist Karla Moe, Oboist Marsha Heller, founding member and violinist Robert Zubrycki, violinist Fritz Krakowski, violist Veronica Salas, cellist Peter Seidenberg, and Logan Coale on double bass. The modern Queen’s Chamber Band will perform a program that combines breathtaking talent, historical perspective, and extraordinary musicianship. The QCB will divulge in a wide variety of tunes including José Raúl Bernardo’s “Echoes from a Distant Land,” the Overture to Bernardo’s musical, Our Man in Havana, Henry Purcell’s “Chaconne in G minor,” by violinists Robert Zubrycki and Fritz Krakowski and other selections.
Individual tickets for this event are on sale now and will be available at the door for $20 or $30 depending on seating. To learn more about AU PAC’s 2010-2011 season, please visit aupac.adelphi.edu or call the AU PAC Box Office at (516) 877-4000.

What is a good viola solo for a seventh grader?
I play viola pretty well, and I wanted to practice with some music pieces a little harder than the ones we are learning in music class(i.e. Brandenburg Concerto No.5 by JS BAch, Spring by Antonio Vivaldi), but easier than Stamitz Viola Concerto(too hard). If anyone could recommend a few pieces that would be great. I would also appreciate if they were free and printable online. Thanks!
I play the viola too! I would definitely look at the Telemann viola concerto in G major! (Especially the 2nd movement if you wanted!) Try to look for it at imslp.org or even google for it. Good luck!

Romance of the Violin $9.08 Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. “O mio babbino caro” from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini’s “Casta diva” from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell’s hands; his violin … |
