How can I get a beefier sound on the high notes on my clarinet?
I have a Bb wooden, Noblet clarinet. On the notes using the register key, the one that makes high notes, with the exception B, C, and C#, do not sound very rich. They sound thin. Anyway to improve this?
1. Make sure that you are using a stiff, good quality reed. A harder reed gives more resistance but actually helps high notes sound much better. Try Vandoren V12 3 or 3.5 (if those are still too weak, try a 4).
2. Keep your tongue high in the mouth – think “eeee” when you play. This will also assist with focus on the very low notes of the clarinet.
3. Get a mouthpiece patch if you don’t have one already – Yamaha sells these in packs of 4 for about $3. They really help with biting.
4. The tendency as we go high on the clarinet is to bite a lot and tighten the embouchure to “squeeze” out the notes. Biting is counterproductive, make sure that the jaw muscles and lips are doing the work, not the teeth.
5. Good air support. Don’t back off with the air as you produce high notes, keep firm, fast air.
6. Bring your clarinet in toward your body so the angle isn’t 45 degrees, but more like 30.
7. Avoid tightening your throat.
Is a Leblanc Noblet 40 a good clarinet for a starting student?
My daughter is 11 and just starting band, and I have a Noblet 40 that has been recently overhauled and looks fantastic. Alas, I cannot base it on the looks, and I do not play. Thanks for the help.
To be honest, when you’re a beginner it doesn’t really matter what your clarinet is like. When your daughter is more advanced she’ll know what sort of things she wants to look for in a clarinet. Every make of clarinet is different, but technically there will be little difference in terms of tone or technical differences until upper intermediate/advanced level.
The best thing to do is make sure that she has a mouthpiece, ligature and reed strength that she is comfortable with, since at that level those are the things that will make the most difference. It’s worth investing in a good mouthpiece and ligature from the start, as a bad reed setting can lead to an awkward playing embouchure. They don’t have to be the same make as the clarinet- I recommend a Vandoren mouthpiece with a cloth ligature.
