Brass instrument sound differences between brands?
I have been playing a King baritone/euphonium and a Besson Eb tuba. Their range is close but they have fairly different sounds. Can someone give me a quick rundown on the sound qualities of some different manufacturers? I have seen the Besson referred to as “dark” or “mellow” and want to hear more about this.
King and Besson have different sound due to the different metals used by King. King will surely not give their secret away.
Also, I worked many years in the music wholesale. If you try a silver bell model. YOu will flip since the sound is punchy, smooth and pure.
It all depends on the plating and the quality of material.
marching euphonium and concert euphonium?
I played on both a marching euphonium and a king 2280 euphonium. The marching euphonium had an 11.8inch bell and .527 bore, while the concert euphonium had a noticeably smaller bell, but I found it had about a 580 bore; it also had a large shank mouthpiece. I recorded myself playing them and found the sound wasn’t too different. The king 2280 had only a slightly darker sound. I’m learning more bore; bell size; shank size; and mouthpiece. I also don’t know why a marching euphonium would have only a .527 bore. Have any of you had similar experiences or thought on such things?
This is a pretty complex topic. Bore size is extremely important for both timbre and endurance. It’s also important in the way the instrument fits in with other similar instruments in the group. You’ll choose the bore based on what you’re doing with the instrument: marching or concert, classical or jazz, etc.
As far as the marching euphonium having a smaller bore and a larger bell, I think that has a lot to do with how much air the instrument requires and how far you want the sound to travel for that effort.

From the looks of this article, the reason for the huge difference in bore sizes is more about how you balance the low brass.
